From my studio near New Galloway, on the edge of Galloway Forest Park, I am offering three-day workshops which will guide you through producing a quilted panel full of colour and detail, using a combination of dye-painting, stencilling, quilting and machine embroidery. I can only take groups of four people at a time so everyone will get plenty of individual attention and the materials and techniques are straightforward to continue with yourself.
Bring your sketchbook if you use one, otherwise I have plenty of paper and pencils. You will need rubber gloves and aprons on the first two days and a sewing machine, with a table and embroidery or darning foot, on last day. If you don’t have a machine to bring, you will be able to use one of mine, but please let me know in advance.
Teas, coffees, and a light lunch will be provided (let me know if you have any special dietary requirements).
Day 1: Planning and dyeing. It’s up to you whether you like to do a detailed design first or work more intuitively, but on this first day I will explain the process and we will look at examples before you dye-paint your fabric, which will then be left overnight for the colours to fix.
Day 2: Stencilling and painting. After boiling out the dye residue we will work on the next layer of the design using adhesive mask and fabric-paints to add detail and depth.
Day 3: Quilting and embroidery. On the final day we will add backing and batting, and quilt the panel using freehand machine stitching. If you are unfamiliar with this technique I am very happy to instruct you and this is an ideal project on which to try it out. If you are an enthusiastic hand quilter/embroiderer, then bring your needles and threads as well!
